Welcome to Kashipur

Kashipur was known as Govishan during the time of harsha (606-647 AD), when Yuan-Chwang (631-641 AD) visited this region. The ruins of the large settlement of those days are still to be seen near the city. Kashipur is named after Kashinath Adhikari, the founder of the township and one of the officers of the Chand rulers of Kumaon in the middle age

Poet Shri Gumani Pant has written a poem on this town. Girital and Drona sagar are well known spots and are associated with the story of the Pandavas. The Chaiti mela is the best known fair of Kashipur. Today Kashipur is an important industrial township. In autumn (after mansoon) one can see the snowclad peaks of Trishul and its surroundings.

Drona Sagar is believed to be associated with Guru Dronacharya, the legendary warrior and teacher in the Mahabharata. This place was once very auspicious and revered as the last pilgrimage spot after the Gangotri, Yamunotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath Dhams. The ‘Skand Puran’ states that the water of this place is as holy as that of the sacred river Ganga.

Kashipur is one of the Biggest Market area for Lower Himalayas as well, Kashipur is becoming a thriving industrial center, the city is suited for Industrial Park projects with cost of living compared to metros. Large industrial houses such as Flexituff International Ltd, IGL, HCL Technologies, Videocon Pasupati Arcylon Limited, etc with several paper and sugar mills already have a presence in the city. Kashipur along with its 33 industries has become a developing industrial region along with cities like Ramnagar and Rudrapur, including almost 180 industries in the state of Uttrakhand.

Culture

Kashipur was upgraded to Nagar Nigam in 2013 which was previously a Nagar Palika Parishad constituted in 1872,  The city's religious profile is highly diverse, Kashipur has a large number of people from Muslim, Sikh and Christian communities. Islam is second most popular religion in city of Kashipur with approximately 35.06% following it. In Kashipur city, Christianity is followed by 0.34%, Jainism by 0.11%, Sikhism by 1.87% and Buddhism by 1.87%. Approximately 0.25% of the population were either Atheists or followed 'No Particular Religion'. The major language spoken in the city is Hindi, Punjabi with a Kumaoni influence.

Education

Kashipur is home to four colleges affiliated to the Kumaun University, Nainital: Radhey Hari Government P.G. College, Chandrawati Tewari Girls P. G. College, Sriram Institute of Management and Technology and Kashipur college of Education. The city also hosts the campus of Indian Institute of Management Kashipur.

Kashipur has a total of 88 Government financed educational institutions, consisting of 48 Primary Schools, 21 middle schools, 9 secondary schools, 9 senior secondary schools and 1 degree college
